Arsenal’s André Santos faces jail after allegedly speeding at 130mph

whilst pursued by police

22 August 2012

According to the Sun, the Arsenal defender is said to have weaved in and out of rush-hour traffic in his Maserati GranTurismo supercar en route to the Gunners’ training pitch in London Colney, Herts.

The 29-year-old left back was finally stopped 500 yards from Arsenal’s training ground.

Police claim Santos accelerated away from pursuing police at speeds of up to 130mph in the £110,000 car.   They were said to have struggled to keep up as the Brazilian international shot away.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 9.30am on Friday August 17, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police on the A1, near to Junction 22 of the M25.

"Officers' attention was drawn to the vehicle due to the manner of its driving. The man has been bailed to return at a date in mid-September to a North London police station."

Santos must answer bail next month and, if found guilty of dangerous driving, could be jailed for up to two years if his case goes to crown court and he is convicted.

Arsenal defender Santos charged by police after 'driving at 130mph'

Arsenal defender Andre Santos has been charged by police with dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention.

The 29-year-old was arrested last month just a couple of miles from the club's training ground.

The Brazilian was apprehended by officers who noticed a car - believed to be a Maserati GranTurismo - being allegedly driven at around 130mph by a driver who failed to stop.

He is due to appear before magistrates later this month, and could be jailed for up to two years if his case goes to Crown Court and he is convicted.

Santos, who is understood to own several expensive cars, joined the Gunners last year from Turkish side Fenerbahce.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman confirmed: 'Andre Santos, 29, of East Finchley, north London, has been charged with dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention on August 17th this year in Mill Hill, north west London.'
